AION 2 Field Guide
Combat Archetypes

Global Roster & Combat Specialization

AION 2 ships with eight playable classes in the global client, each filling an uncompromising combat role. Class choice is independent of faction (Elyos and Asmodians both field every archetype). Dive into role mechanics, weapon proficiencies, solo vs group ratings, and endgame Daevanion progression paths.

Archetype

Gladiator

Melee DPS / off-tank
Primary Weapon

Greatsword, polearm

Complexity

Beginner friendly

Gladiator is the frontline bruiser of AION 2: heavy melee damage backed by enough mitigation to survive the opening hit of a pull and keep swinging while the healer catches up. Community class round-ups repeatedly place it in the recommended solo tier because it levels without a pocket healer, and the original NCSOFT eight-class announcement listed it alongside Templar in the tank column.

Archetype

Templar

Main tank
Primary Weapon

Sword and shield, mace and shield

Complexity

Beginner friendly

Templar is the shield class: the group anchor that holds threat, soaks the boss opener and keeps the healer free to look at the rest of the party. It is the class most likely to be recruited instantly at level cap, and the trade for that demand is a slower solo experience because damage comes from the second priority list.

Archetype

Assassin

Melee burst DPS
Primary Weapon

Dual daggers, short blades

Complexity

High skill ceiling

Assassin is the stealth burst class. It wins fights by deciding when they start: open from concealment, unload a short burst window, then reposition before the target can answer. Community guides name Assassin first for one-on-one and small-scale PvP, and second for players who want a mechanically demanding character rather than a forgiving one.

Archetype

Ranger

Ranged physical DPS
Primary Weapon

Bow

Complexity

Moderate

Ranger is the bow class and the natural answer to any fight you would rather not take at melee range. Community class lists put it in the recommended solo tier because kiting lets it beat encounters that overpower a stationary character. One naming note worth knowing: the original NCSOFT eight-class announcement labelled this slot Marksman, while most community sites and the AION 2 Hub class index call it Ranger, so treat the two names as the same class.

Archetype

Sorcerer

Ranged magic DPS
Primary Weapon

Orb, spellbook

Complexity

Moderate

Sorcerer is the glass cannon caster: the largest single-target magic burst in the game attached to one of the smallest health pools. Community PvP notes repeatedly name Sorcerer for burst plus crowd control, which is exactly the pairing that makes it lethal in a small fight and punishing in a long one where a missed chain leaves it exposed.

Archetype

Spiritmaster

Summoner / ranged magic DPS
Primary Weapon

Orb, staff

Complexity

Moderate

Spiritmaster fights with a summoned spirit doing part of the work. Community class lists consistently place it in the best solo tier because the summon tanks while the player applies damage over time, which turns many elite encounters into a slow but safe win. It is the most forgiving caster to level and one of the more technical to optimise at cap.

Archetype

Cleric

Main healer
Primary Weapon

Mace, staff

Complexity

Moderate

Cleric is the dedicated healer and the class every organised group needs. Community faction and class round-ups list it as the safest support choice for players who enjoy group content, and the trade is a slower solo experience because the healing toolkit does not translate into fast kills. At level cap a competent Cleric is one of the most in-demand characters on a server.

Archetype

Chanter

Support / hybrid healer
Primary Weapon

Polearm, staff

Complexity

Moderate

Chanter sits between Cleric and the melee classes: it buffs the group, off-heals when the main healer is stretched, and still swings a polearm. Search interest in Chanter is unusually high for a support class, and community round-ups list it as the best group support after Templar and Cleric because a good Chanter raises everyone else rather than topping a meter.

Archetype

Brawler

Melee DPS
Primary Weapon

Fists and gauntlets

Complexity

Moderate

Brawler is the ninth class and the one with the least settled answer. It was added in a regional update that also raised the level cap to 50, and community class indexes currently tag it as available on the Korea and Taiwan clients only. Because the global client had not shipped at the time of writing, treat any global Brawler build guide you find as unverified until NCSOFT confirms it, and read the class list with that caveat in mind.

Roster Theory

How the roster is put together

The eight launch classes split into four distinct tactical roles. Templar serves as the dedicated vanguard tank, while Gladiator functions as a bruiser capable of holding the frontline while dishing sustained area-of-effect cleave. Assassin and Ranger deliver explosive physical damage from stealth melee and long range respectively.

Sorcerer and Spiritmaster govern the magical spectrum—one relying on devastating burst elemental artillery, the other commanding spirits and sustained damage-over-time attrition. Cleric and Chanter form the divine backline: Cleric provides raw emergency triage and resurrection, whereas Chanter weaves offensive battle mantras and kinetic melee support.

Strategic Selection Checklist

  • Solo Expeditions: Weight self-sustain, crowd control, and burst TTK (Time to Kill) above party buffs—Gladiator, Spiritmaster, and Ranger shine.
  • Instant Group Invites: Play roles groups cannot function without—Templar (main tank) and Cleric (dedicated healer) never wait in LFG queues.
  • Abyss Aerial PvP: Prioritize instantaneous gap-closers or disengage options to survive 360-degree aerial dogfights.
  • Future-Proofing: Choose the class whose core gameplay loop excites you even when not playing in an optimized meta composition.
Class Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many classes are in AION 2 at launch?

Eight classes are available in the global client: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter. A ninth, Brawler, is documented on the Korea and Taiwan clients.

Can both factions play every class?

Yes. Class choice is independent of faction, so every class available on your client is playable by both Elyos and Asmodians.

Which class should a new player pick?

Community round-ups recommend Gladiator, Spiritmaster and Ranger for players who level alone, and Templar, Cleric and Chanter for players who want to be recruited into groups.
