The gathering side: Essence Extraction
Essence Extraction is the collection skill. It is described as one of the life career tracks alongside the crafting professions, and it has its own progression that advances as you extract materials from the world. The important structural point is that a profession level is not a character level: a profession level of 50 has nothing to do with reaching character level 50, and the two curves are unrelated.
The five crafting professions
| Profession | What it produces | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Weapons and metal components | Anyone building a damage weapon through crafting rather than dungeons |
| Armorsmithing | Armour pieces and plating | Players gearing a tank or filling a missing slot |
| Handicrafting | Accessories, cloth and utility items | Players chasing appearance and accessory pieces |
| Alchemy | Potions, consumables, conversion items | Every player, because consumables are consumed permanently |
| Cooking | Food buffs | Group content players and anyone extending a farming session |
Tiers: Novice and Professional
Professions are described in tiers, with Novice and Professional representing the published split. Reaching the Professional tier is a milestone rather than a formality: it gates the recipes that matter and it is where the material cost stops being trivial. Guides that talk about reaching Professional are describing a progression goal, not a single quest step.
How to level professions without a dedicated grind
- Start early. The nodes are on the leveling path anyway, and a profession you start at 10 costs nothing to keep current.
- Extract everything you pass rather than only the materials for your current recipe. Surplus feeds the higher tiers.
- Bank materials in storage by tier, so the Professional push does not stall on a missing stack.
- Do not vendoring crafting materials for currency unless the market price is clearly above the crafting value.
- Check the recipe list before you pick a profession, not after you have levelled one.
How this connects to gear progression
Crafting and enhancement are the two ways to turn a leveling character into a geared one. Enhancement attempts carry escalating currency costs, with reported upper-tier inheritance attempts costing tens of millions of Kina at the third attempt and beyond, which is why most players enhance deliberately rather than repeatedly. Crafting is the alternative path: slower, but it lets you fill a specific slot instead of gambling on a drop. The two systems are complementary, and a player who does neither arrives at level 50 with the gear they were given.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What is Essence Extraction in AION 2?
It is the gathering life skill. It supplies the materials used by the five crafting professions and levels on its own track, separate from your character level.
How many crafting professions are in AION 2?
Five are documented: Blacksmithing, Armorsmithing, Handicrafting, Alchemy and Cooking.
Does profession level 50 mean character level 50?
No. They are unrelated progressions, and profession levels advance from gathering and crafting rather than from combat experience.
