AION 2 Field Guide

What AION 2 is, in one paragraph

AION 2 is an open-world MMORPG from NCSOFT built in Unreal Engine 5 and set 200 years after the original AION. It keeps the two-faction structure and the flight identity of the first game, adds a manual, aim-driven combat model, and launches free to play on Steam and PURPLE. There are two playable factions, eight global classes, and a level cap of 50 at launch, with the seasonal structure restarting the endgame loop every three months or so.

The five decisions that matter in your first session

  1. Pick your faction. It is locked per server and decides your starting zones, your field bosses and the names of the gear you will chase. Match your friends, otherwise follow the faction comparison.
  2. Pick your class. Class is not locked to faction, so this is a free choice. Choose the role you enjoy playing rather than the top of a tier list, because the trip to 50 is long.
  3. Do not skip the opening campaign. The early quest chain is the fastest source of experience, gear and travel unlocks for the first several hours, and it hands out the basic systems one at a time.
  4. Open the map before you walk somewhere. Automatic pathing in the global client has been widely reported as unreliable, so use the map to teleport whenever a travel point exists.
  5. Set up gathering early rather than later. Essence Extraction and the crafting professions level on their own timers, and starting them at level 10 costs nothing while starting them at 50 wastes the nodes you already walked past.

  • Unlock the Nightmare dungeon early so the ticket system starts refilling instead of standing idle.
  • Odyle Energy is the same resource that opens dungeon cubes, and every alt character recharges its own pool.
  • Daily dungeons are solo and quick, and weekly PvE quests behave exactly like mandatory tasks.

Two things to fix in the first week

  • Unlock the Nightmare dungeon as early as it becomes available. Its ticket system only starts refilling once the content is unlocked, so every day you delay is a day of allowance you never get back.
  • Know that Odyle Energy recharges per character rather than per account. Keeping one alt running effectively doubles your daily budget of dungeon cube openings, which is the strongest mechanical argument for a second character early.

Faction: Elyos or Asmodian

The two factions are mirror versions of each other in structure and differ in story, starting territory, field bosses and the naming of equivalent gear. Neither side has a structural advantage in class power, so the honest answer is to play with the people you want to play with. Solo players should pick the faction with the healthier population on their server, because a lopsided server makes both PvP and the auction economy miserable.

Flight, gliding and the aerial layer

Flight is the identity of the series and it is not cosmetic here. Gliding and flying are used to reach collectibles, to cross terrain that would otherwise cost minutes, and to reposition in open-world PvP. Empyrean Traces, the collectibles the community calls feathers, frequently sit in places you can only reach by air or by clearing the mobs guarding the approach, so treat movement unlocks as progression rather than convenience.

Five early mistakes that cost hours

  • Vendoring or destroying old gear before checking whether it can be inherited or converted. Keep the first tier of upgraded pieces until you know what the upgrade path does.
  • Ignoring the feathers you walk past. They look like scenery and they are the cheapest permanent power in the early game.
  • Rolling a second character in week one because a tier list changed. Levels are the scarce resource; classes are not permanently locked out of a reroll later.
  • Fighting the Spacetime Rift without a PvP-ready preset. The rift is a PvP zone first and a loot zone second.
  • Assuming a blocked character creation is a bug. Popular worlds cap creation on purpose, and the documented fix is to pick a different world.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach level 50 in AION 2?

Reported routes for experienced players sit around 10 to 14 hours in the current seasonal content. A first character with no route knowledge takes considerably longer.

Can I change faction after creating a character?

Faction is chosen per server and is not a free toggle. Treat it as permanent and pick deliberately.

Should I level crafting while leveling my character?

Yes. Gathering nodes are on your leveling path anyway, and the professions level independently of your combat level.
